* ARGININE This amino acid is readily converted to nitric oxide in the body. NO is a potent vasodilator - it gets more blood flow to the muscles and therefore more oxygen and more nutrients like amino acids and glucose for enhanced energy levels in the muscles, which leads to greater strength and more intense workouts. Increased blood flow to muscle also leads to more fluid being delivered. This can lead to better pumps and long-term gains in size. Arginine also boosts growth hormone levels, and research has shown that subjects supplementing with arginine simultaneously gain muscle while dropping bodyfat.
The overall rate of preterm birth was also reduced in women randomised to L-arginine plus antioxidant vitamins. The mean plasma concentration of L-arginine was lower at the first visit in women who later developed pre-eclampsia (20.5, SD 8.3) compared with those who did not develop pre-eclampsia (22.6, SD 8.8) (P<0.01).This study was a three arm clinical trial testing the hypothesis that a combination of L-arginine and antioxidant supplementation would reduce the risk of pre-eclampsia in a high risk population.
